Woven Labels vs Printed Labels: Which Is Right for Your Brand?

When it comes to garment labels, two options dominate the market: woven labels and printed labels. Both display your brand name, logo, size, and care instructions — but they differ significantly in how they look, how they feel, how long they last, and how much they cost. Choosing the right type of label is an important decision for any apparel brand.

What Is a Woven Label?

A woven label is a fabric label produced on a loom by weaving threads together to form text, logos, and designs. The design is woven directly into the fabric — not printed on top of it — making woven labels extremely durable. They maintain their appearance wash after wash and do not fade, crack, or peel. Woven labels are the standard choice for premium fashion brands, workwear, sportswear, and any garment that will be washed frequently.

What Is a Printed Label?

A printed label is produced by printing text, logos, and designs onto a fabric or synthetic material using ink or heat transfer technology. Printed labels are faster and cheaper to produce than woven labels and are ideal for high-volume production runs where cost efficiency is the priority. They are commonly used for care instruction labels, size labels, and secondary branding labels inside garments.

Woven Labels vs Printed Labels — Key Differences

Durability

Woven labels are significantly more durable than printed labels. Because the design is woven into the fabric rather than applied on top, it cannot fade, crack, or wash out. Printed labels, especially those using standard inkjet or screen printing methods, can fade after repeated washing. Heat transfer printed labels have better durability but still do not match woven labels for longevity.

Appearance and Feel

Woven labels have a premium, textured appearance that signals quality craftsmanship. The raised texture of a woven label is immediately recognizable as a mark of quality. Printed labels have a flatter, smoother appearance that is more neutral — professional but less distinctive than woven.

Cost

Printed labels are less expensive to produce than woven labels, particularly at lower quantities. Woven labels require a loom setup cost that makes them more cost-effective at higher volumes. For brands producing at scale, the cost difference between woven and printed labels per unit becomes very small.

Customization

Both woven and printed labels can be fully customized with your brand name, logo, colors, and text. Woven labels are better suited for detailed logos with fine lines and small text. Printed labels handle photographic quality images and gradients more accurately than weaving.

Minimum Order Quantity

Printed labels generally have lower MOQs than woven labels due to the simpler production process. This makes printed labels a better choice for small brands or test runs. Woven labels are more suited to established brands with consistent production volumes.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose woven labels if: you are a premium or mid-to-high-end brand, your garments will be washed frequently, you want a distinctive tactile quality signal, or you are producing at medium to high volume. Choose printed labels if: you need low MOQ for a small run, you want to minimize cost on secondary labels like care instructions, or you need photographic-quality reproduction of a complex logo. Many brands use both: a woven main label for brand identity on the collar or hem, and a printed label for care and size information inside the garment.
